When we were growing up, desserts were not a regular post-meal occurrence. Sure, there were fruits in the house and the occasional Vietnamese sweets on traditional holidays but cakes and cookies only made their appearances on birthdays.

Ice Cream

So it is a bit surprising (or not) to see that we all have developed quite the sweet tooth as we have gotten older. Not only my siblings and I—but even our dad has become quite the chocoholic and always requests only chocolate-based desserts these days.

Whole Bean Coffee

But of course, one of our favorite sweet treats comes in the chilly, frozen form. And not just ice cream but frozen yogurt, gelato, slushees, and shave ice….. Yup, we love frozen treats.

Ice Cream Maker

We adore it so much that we started making our own goodies to not only satisfy our cravings but also to give us new culinary challenges.

Together, we’ve created a variety of flavors such as chocolate, vanilla bean, fresh strawberry, toasted coconut, mint chip, passion fruit and mango.

Ingredients - Macadamia Nuts, Chocolate

But hands down, a crowd pleaser amongst the family is coffee.

With my family’s taste buds in mind, I created a coffee based ice cream to not only cool you down during the summer heat but also celebrates the flavors of the islands.

Frozen treat

If you did not know, KING'S HAWAIIAN isn’t just about delicious bread but they also carry a delectable Toasted Coconut Moloka'i Whole Bean Coffee. The coffee is incredibly floral with subtle hints of coconut.

I paired the delightful coffee with roasted macadamia nuts and chunks of Valrhona chocolate to create this wonderfully creamy Macadamia-Java-Chip Ice Cream.

The end results? An ultimate winner amongst the family--Two thumbs up and a shaka!

With summer in full swing, bring your o’hana together with this onolicious sweet (and frozen) treat!
