Life on a ranch doesn't lend towards too many vacations.  You have to be there to check on the animals, it is our way of life.  However, there are lots of things you can do from home to enjoy a staycation.

Host a family meeting, let everyone toss out ideas for your vacation at home.  Commit to having fun without the interruption of phone calls, texts, emails and other digital distractions.  Do something out of your ordinary routine. Focus on the time with your family.

1. Rent a boat at a nearby lake.  Most large lakes have boat rentals.  Rent a pontoon boat and take the whole family and maybe even the dogs (we do!) and have a day on the lake.  Pontoon boats can be fun and relaxing with lots of room for the whole family.  Usually you can fish, swim or even pull a tube.  My kids love the water and this is what we are doing this summer!

2. Camp in the backyard.  Pitch a tent and gather up the sleeping bags. Build a campfire and roast marshmallows to make s'mores.  Set up a game of horseshoes, volleyball or badminton.   We have had the some of the best conversations with our kids around a campfire.

3. Tour local historical sites or museums.  When you go to looking, it seems that there are always those places that you always intend to visit but never take the time for.  This is the perfect time to make that happen.  From hiking trails to scenic drives there are endless possibilities here.  Visit the local candy store or ice cream shop, take your time and enjoy the day.

4. If the weather is not great outside, plan a movie marathon.  Let each family member choose a movie or two.  Make some fun movie-themed food or order takeout.  You could also pop popcorn, make Italian Sodas or ice cream floats.  Pile pillows on the floor, stretch out with the kids and enjoy!

5. Create a treasure hunt for the kids.  Hide small treasures, movie tickets, gift cards for the ice cream shop or book store.  Make a map and then you can sit back and relax while the kids hunt.  They are sure to be thrilled with each find.  Afterwards you can redeem the gift cards, go to the movies and have an ice cream on the way home.

There are so many fun ways to enjoy a staycation.  The important thing is to enjoy the time with your family!  Make some memories!
