Winters in Vermont are long and cold. I don't spend a lot of time outside when the ground is covered with snow. I eagerly look forward to the warmer weather so I can enjoy the great outdoors again.  We like doing a variety of different things outside. The gardens always seem to need weeded.  The ducks and chickens are fun to watch as they search for bugs and food in the backyard. My husband loves to get out the grill when we have friends over for dinner. My son plays basketball or goes for a run up the dirt road where we live. My daughter alternates between laying out in the sun with a book and helping me work in the yard. No matter what  you choose to do outside, it's a great way to get people together.

I try really hard to connect with my kids. As a mom of two teenagers, that can be a challenge. We often don't see eye to eye on things. I don't particularly enjoy their music and they aren't really fond of mine. The nice weather gives me an opportunity to enjoy time with my kids in the great outdoors. While I'm not the best basketball player, I can certainly shoot a few hoops with my son. A walk in the woods becomes even more fun when my daughter and I are geocaching together. And at the end of the day, there is no better way to enjoy a meal together than with these hot ham and cheese sliders.

Hot Ham and Cheese Sliders with Cranberry Mustard
makes 8 sliders

Cranberry Mustard Sauce

  • 1 tbsp cranberry mustard
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/4 tbsp garlic powder (not salt)


Slice the KING'S HAWAIIAN Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls in half. Butter each side of the roll with the softened butter.  

Fold one slice of honey ham and one half of Provolone cheese for each slider. Place the top on and set in a pie plate or baking dish.

At this point you can cover the pan and place it in the refrigerator if you want to prepare them ahead of time. If you're ready to eat right now, preheat the oven to 350F.  

Mix the mustard, melted butter and garlic powder and drizzle over the top of the sliders. Let them stand for 10 minutes while the oven is preheating.  

Cover them with tin foil and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Uncover them & heat for about two more minutes until the tops are golden brown and slightly crispy.

Your kids will appreciate the time you spend together so much more when you end the day with these delicious hot ham and cheese sliders.
