Simmering stews are a big part of Hawaii meals and believe it or not, so are hot dogs! A great way to liven up your grilled hot dog is to add some Hawaiian Chili made with Portuguese Sausage – a Hawaiian plate lunch staple. Then add a little crunch of cool, creamy coleslaw alongside and you have the perfect party food all in one!

1 Portuguese Sausage
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (28 oz) can stewed tomatoes
1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
1 can kidney beans
2 Tablespoons Chili Powder
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Dash of cayenne
Chop the Portuguese sausage into small pieces, brown, then drain and set that aside.
In the same pot brown the ground beef, then add the onions and garlic, cooking until soft.
Add the stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce and kidney beans, as well as the Portuguese sausage.
In a small bowl combine the chili powder, brown sugar, oregano, cumin, salt and pepper, stir together then add to the pot. Add the cayenne to your liking.
Cook on a low simmer for 1 hour.
1 head green cabbage, finely shredded
1 large carrot, finely shredded
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
Salt and freshly ground pepper
In a small bowl stir together the mayonnaise, sour cream and celery seed. Toss with the shredded cabbage and carrot, season with salt and pepper. Let chill in the fridge.
