There is no greater honor than to be part in a wedding. Over the years, I have had the privilege to be a Best Man and groomsman to over a dozen close friends. This past summer, I was in a wedding in Oahu. I have a family friend named Oliver, who I have known for over 20 years. Oliver is a native of Hawaii and his wedding was in his hometown of Waikiki. Oliver married a woman named Ruth, who was also a native from Oahu, in a nearby community called Ewa Beach.  The two of them celebrated their wedding and recited their vows at a beachfront hotel in downtown Waikiki. As you can imagine, it was a beautiful and spectacular event.

Ohana Reflection

As I spent the week in Hawaii, I was reminded of the many family vacations I have taken over the years. From the early stages of having toddlers, to the last vacations with my children when they were teens; the Hawaiian Islands have special family memories in my heart.

Family Vacations, Hot Dog Stands

One of my family favorite memories with my kids, was searching for the best Hot Dog Stands. Many people don’t know this, but Hot Dog stands are a “big deal” in Hawaii. Each hot dog stand has a different name, style and flavor. My kids loved eating hot dogs when we were on vacation in Hawaii; I could never get enough. It was great family fun searching out the variety of hot dogs and tasting their signature toppings. On the mainland, we like to call these toppings, “Relish”, but beware: When visiting a Hawaiian Hot Dog Stand, do not call their toppings relish. These Hot Dog stand owners have a lot of pride in what they do, and calling their signature sauces and toppings “relish” is an insult to their profession.

As always, I ate my share of Hot Dogs when I was out there and I was able to talk to a few of these Hot Dog stand owners about their toppings. My Dad Cooking Blogger instincts took over and I was able to convince some owners to share their toppings recipes and so I brought back a taste of the Hawaiian Island Hot Dog stands to my kitchen to share with you. Give these Hot and Sweet Toppings a try and create your own Hawaiian Hot Dog Memory using the KING'S HAWAIIAN Original Hawaiian Sweet Mini Sub Rolls as your Hot Dog Bun. Aloha!
