Moving Boxes

Moving your family home is never fun but it does seem to bring family and friends closer together.  My family recently moved in to a new home and while moving day, and the month leading up to it, was stressful; it also provided a great opportunity to reconnect with friends.  We are lucky to have some great people in our lives that are always willing to help us move (which seems to happen every few years).  It is important to me that I make sure they are well taken care of as they take time away from their own families to help mine.

Moving Essentials

Moving Essentials

I always make sure I have the essentials ready for moving day.  Over the years we have learned what you should have at the ready.  For me, it is our family binder with all our health info as well as utility company information.  Paper and pen is a must for notes on what you need to buy for the new place and things that need to be fixed.  While my husband has a full tool set that he uses, it is often handy for me to also have a selection of screwdrivers and scissors.  Trash bags are a must and I love also having a pop up trashcan that you just throw away when done.  Paper plates, cups and disposable silverware should be handy as there is a good chance you won’t be able to find your dishes for a few days.  And never forget the important paper goods, such as toilet paper and paper towels.  You do not want your helpers having to ask you for these things.

Cold Drinks

Cold Drinks

Be sure to have a variety of cold beverages on hand for your movers.  Some will just want water while others may want an energy drink.  Of course you can use an ice chest for them, but you can also use one of the many organizational bins you are sure to have on hand.

Snacks

Snacks

All that manual labor is hard work so be sure to have easy snacks on hand for your helpers to grab when they need it.  Keep it easy for them so they can eat it on the go or in the car moving from one location to the next.

Lunch Orders

Lunch Order

My family has been lucky to never have to pay for professional movers.  So it is important to me that our friends get a good lunch. These truly are the people that would drop everything to help you when you need it.  We take a nice long lunch break and share some laughs around the table before it is time to get back to it.

Flavored Water

Flavored Water

At lunch I like to bring out some flavored water.  It is really easy to make and requires little preparation or ingredients.  I usually have some fresh fruit around for my boys anyway so I simply cut up a few strawberries and add those and about half a lemon to a pitcher of water earlier in the day (As I like to know where my silverware is during a move, I usually pack it up in a large zip lock bag and put it in a large lidded pitcher and transport it to our new place myself which I can then use to make this yummy water).  It is a special touch that I can easily do that adds a little surprise to the day without adding any extra stress.

Entertaining

Easy entertaining in our new home

While some of our family was around on moving day to help, the rest of them have yet to see our new home.  Or you may want to say “thank you” to those awesome friends who helped move all your furniture.  It can take a while to feel settled but you can easily entertain even if you can’t find your favorite serving pieces.  Simply display fresh flowers (from the store or your new yard) in clear plastic cups.  Just add a rock for some weight and a few blooms.  It is a super quick way to add some color to your home even if there are still unpacked boxes around.

BBQ Chicken Sandwiches

An easy and delicious meal for your guests

Shredded barbecue chicken is my go-to protein for easy entertaining and weeknight meals.  We have it often and in many variations (i.e. tacos, pizza, sandwiches). Our barbecue chicken meals always have the same delicious ingredients and each person can add what they want to their dish based on their preferences.  I set out shredded barbecue chicken, cilantro, jack cheese, pineapple and red onion. If you are feeling settled and know where your crock-pot is, you can make your own chicken with just a bottle of barbecue sauce.  You can just as easily pick up a rotisserie chicken or two (depending on your number of guests) to save you the trouble.  Your guests are not expecting to be wined and dined considering you have just moved in if there was ever a time and a place for paper plates, this is it.

Serve the sandwiches on KING'S HAWAIIAN Original Hawaiian Sweet Sandwich Buns with some Maui onion chips and you’ve created a nice meal for your guests that is delicious but didn’t take you all day to prepare.

With our busy lives it is often hard to find quality time to spend with our closest friends and family.  Try to remember that entertaining doesn’t have to be difficult and should really be about spending time with each other.
